How to Celebrate National Ice Cream Day

Nothing goes better together than ice cream (or custard) and a warm summer night in Wisconsin. Today is National Ice Cream Day and it is not just another corporate ploy to sell ice cream. Rather, President Ronald Reagan actually declared July as National Ice Cream Month in 1984, and in a very serious proclamation, made the third Sunday of the month National Ice Cream Day. “I call upon the people of the United States to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities,” Reagan wrote. His main reasoning: Everyone loves ice cream. Reagan said that ice cream “is enjoyed by over 90 percent of people in the United States,” and stated that in 1983 alone, it generated $3.5 billion in annual sales, provided thousands of jobs for citizens and contributed “substantially to the economic well-being of the Nation’s dairy industry.”

To help celebrate this wonderful holiday in the Dairy State, we have compiled a list of your favorite ice cream (and custard) spots. Take a break today and treat yourself to some of Wisconsin’s finest dairy products.
